Social media calendars have become a new standard tool for managing digital content. Why? because they solve multiple problems at once, organize content, make planning visual, and offer other tangible benefits. As someone who uses these calendars regularly (for multiple clients!) I promise that calendaring social media posts is one of the easiest ways to get your social presence where you want it.
Social media calendars help you stay organized and keep your organization’s feed active and intentional. It gives you a clear view of what’s being posted each week and allows you to plan ahead, so you’re not scrambling for content at the last minute.
Spoiler alert: We calendar out social media content for Whip’s clients anywhere from 2 weeks to 1 month ahead of time. Especially if you go through multiple levels of approvals, it makes life much easier to get approval on one or two big batches of content at a time, rather than going back and forth multiple times throughout the month.
Even if you’re not an agency or a large organization, here is how a social media calendar can make your life easier.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY
If you aren’t posting on social media consistently, you probably won’t gain any visibility or keep your existing audience engaged. Consistent posting is key when managing a social media page. Long or inconsistent gaps between posts will cause your audience to lose interest (and it will cause the ever-mysterious algorithm to stop showing your content to followers). When viewers see that you are making content they can rely on, they get familiar with your brand, start to trust you, and continue to be invested.
A calendar helps you plan the next two weeks, month, or two months in your content calendar. Once you draft and schedule the content, it’s “set it and forget it” because it then automatically gets posted at its scheduled time! This is a huge time saver, and allows you to see what will be posted when across all your social media platforms.
Note: Consistently does not = constantly. You don’t have to post every day to be consistent. You can post once a week, and as long as you continue to post once a week, that is consistency.

STRATEGIC PLANNING
Instead of creating content on the fly, a calendar allows you to align your content with upcoming holidays, campaign launches, and organizational goals. Staying up to date on trends means you can capitalize on moments you might not have had the time to before.
Creating content ahead of time to schedule on your calendar ensures that your messaging is intentional and cohesive.
Example: one of our clients works with houses of worship across all faiths in New York City. For our social media calendar, we look ahead to religious events in New York as well as all religious holidays from Eid al-Fitr to Passover.
IMPROVES PERFORMANCE TRACKING
When posts are planned out ahead of time, it’s a lot easier to keep track of which posts perform the best. That then gives you time to plan to use that type of content again in the future. It also lets you track frequency and timing, so you can see which times your posts tend to receive more engagement. This is crucial data for optimizing future strategies! Without it, you are just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks..
